Kan, six in the third placeHexagram 29, line 3 · Kan (The Abyss) · changing to 48
The line
In plain wordsComing is danger, going is danger; a pit in front, nothing steady to lean on behind, and you fall into the hole at the bottom of the pit. Do nothing for now.
The Image commentary on this line
來之坎坎,終无功也。
"Coming or going, abyss upon abyss": in the end there is no achievement.
The small Image commentary is the earliest explanation of the line texts. It usually explains a line from its position: where it stands, whether it holds the center, and which line answers it.
Verdict
慎Proceed with care. There is some risk, or some regret left over, but nothing serious. Notice it early, correct it early, and things turn for the better.

Asking about work, love or money
- Work
- Going forward is dangerous and going back is dangerous, and there are pits all through the work in front of you. Do nothing for now: don't change jobs and don't take on new work. Any move now is wasted effort.
- Love
- A step forward is a pit, and a step back is no steadier. Make no decisions for now: don't declare your feelings, don't have it out, don't split up. Find your footing where you are; moving will get you nowhere.
- Money
- Every way you could move is risky, and nowhere is safe to put your money. Do nothing for now: don't invest, don't borrow, don't shift funds around. Hold still until you can see clearly.
This is how to read it when this is the only changing line. With several changing lines, first see which text governs; for the hexagram as a whole, see Kan.
Line position
A yin line in a yang place: it is not in its proper place. Its partner is the top line, which is also yin, so there is no answer from it.
Third place: the top of the lower trigram, a place of risk. A moment of transition. Be on guard.
When you get this line
If this is the only changing line in your cast (three inscribed sides, old yin), this line is your answer. The primary hexagram is Kan (The Abyss); when this line changes it becomes Jing (The Well): hexagram 29 changing to 48.
