The line

Text咸其腓,凶。居吉。The influence is in the calf. Misfortune. Staying put brings good fortune.

In plain wordsThe feeling is in the calf — before you have thought it through, the leg moves first. Misfortune. Stay quietly where you are, and there is good fortune.

The Image commentary on this line

雖凶,居吉,順不害也。

Though there is "misfortune", "staying put brings good fortune": by complying one comes to no harm.

The small Image commentary is the earliest explanation of the line texts. It usually explains a line from its position: where it stands, whether it holds the center, and which line answers it.

Verdict

慎Proceed with care. The text names both a good and a bad outcome: one way of acting leads to each. The result depends on which you choose.

  • 吉 good fortune: the matter turns out well
  • 凶 misfortune: a bad outcome if you continue this way

Asking about work, love or money

Work
Rushing to change jobs, switch direction or show off before you have thought it through will lead to trouble. Hold yourself back and stay quietly where you are until the time comes; that turns out better.
Love
Before you have made up your mind, your feet are already moving: rushing to ask the other person out, rushing to pursue, rushing for an answer. All of that spoils things. Stay quiet and let things take their course; that turns out better.
Money
The moment something catches your eye, your legs start moving first: ordering and paying before you have done the math. That costs you. Hold still until you have thought it through, and you will be fine.

This is how to read it when this is the only changing line. With several changing lines, first see which text governs; for the hexagram as a whole, see Xian.

Line position

A yin line in a yin place: it is in its proper place; it holds the center of its trigram. Its partner is the fifth line, which is its opposite, so the two answer each other.

Second place: the center of the lower trigram, a place of praise. Stay centered and yielding.
