Jing, nine in the third placeHexagram 48, line 3 · Jing (The Well) · changing to 29
The line
In plain wordsThe well has been cleaned out, yet no one comes to drink, and it pains the heart. This water could be drawn up and used. If the king is wise, both those who draw the water and those who drink it receive the blessing. Talent that has not been put to use.
The Image commentary on this line
井渫不食,行惻也。求王明,受福也。
"The well is cleaned out, yet no one drinks": those passing by ache for it. One hopes that "the king is clear-sighted": then blessing is received.
The small Image commentary is the earliest explanation of the line texts. It usually explains a line from its position: where it stands, whether it holds the center, and which line answers it.
Verdict
慎Proceed with care. The text gives no verdict, but the picture holds an obstacle and a warning. Slow down and watch the point it warns about.

Asking about work, love or money
- Work
- You have made yourself ready, yet you are still not being used, and it galls you. Your abilities can truly be put to work, so don't let resentment muddy them; when you meet a superior who sees clearly, you and everyone else will benefit.
- Love
- You have made yourself ready and your feelings are clean, yet the other person has not noticed, and it hurts. Don't close your heart or turn bitter because you feel wronged; once the other person sees clearly, you will both be blessed.
- Money
- What you have is good and fairly priced, yet no one comes to buy it or use it, and you are anxious. Don't sell it off cheaply, and don't lower your standards out of anxiety; go find the people who can see its worth.
This is how to read it when this is the only changing line. With several changing lines, first see which text governs; for the hexagram as a whole, see Jing.
Line position
A yang line in a yang place: it is in its proper place. Its partner is the top line, which is its opposite, so the two answer each other.
Third place: the top of the lower trigram, a place of risk. A moment of transition. Be on guard.
When you get this line
If this is the only changing line in your cast (three backs, old yang), this line is your answer. The primary hexagram is Jing (The Well); when this line changes it becomes Kan (The Abyss): hexagram 48 changing to 29.
