Jian, six at the beginningHexagram 53, line 1 · Jian (Gradual Progress) · changing to 37
The line
In plain wordsThe wild goose has flown to the water's edge. You are just starting out, with nowhere yet to settle and nobody above looking out for you. A young person will find it dangerous, and people will have a few things to say. But in principle there is no blame.
The Image commentary on this line
小子之厲,義无咎也。
The danger "for the young one": by what is right there is no blame.
The small Image commentary is the earliest explanation of the line texts. It usually explains a line from its position: where it stands, whether it holds the center, and which line answers it.
Verdict
慎Proceed with care. There is some risk, or some regret left over, but nothing serious. Notice it early, correct it early, and things turn for the better.

Asking about work, love or money
- Work
- You are just starting out, without a firm footing and with no one looking out for you, so you are bound to feel unsure, and people will have a few things to say. Don't let that throw off your pace. Go step by step by the rules; in principle, you are not in the wrong.
- Love
- Your love life is just starting out, or just entering a new stage, with nothing settled yet. You feel unsure, and others may gossip. Don't rush for an outcome, and don't let the talk scare you off. Take it slowly; you have done nothing wrong.
- Money
- You have just started saving, or just started earning on your own. Your base is thin and no one is backing you, so you feel anxious, and people may laugh at how little you make. Don't let that push you into rash moves. Go bit by bit; there is nothing wrong in that.
This is how to read it when this is the only changing line. With several changing lines, first see which text governs; for the hexagram as a whole, see Jian.
Line position
A yin line in a yang place: it is not in its proper place. Its partner is the fourth line, which is also yin, so there is no answer from it.
First place: the beginning of the matter. Low position, little power. Begin carefully.
