Zhun, six in the third placeHexagram 3, line 3 · Zhun (Difficult Beginnings) · changing to 63

The line

Text即鹿无虞,惟入于林中。君子幾不如舍,往吝。Chasing deer without a guide, one only ends up deep in the forest. The noble one reads the signs: better to give up. Going on brings humiliation.

In plain wordsChasing a deer with no guide, you will only plunge headlong into the forest. When things look wrong, it is better to let go; keep up the chase and you will lose face and lose out.

The Image commentary on this line

即鹿无虞,以從禽也。君子舍之,往吝窮也。

"Chasing deer without a guide": this is running after the game. "The noble one" gives it up: "going on brings humiliation" and a dead end.

The small Image commentary is the earliest explanation of the line texts. It usually explains a line from its position: where it stands, whether it holds the center, and which line answers it.

Verdict

慎Proceed with care. There is some risk, or some regret left over, but nothing serious. Notice it early, correct it early, and things turn for the better.

  • 吝 humiliation: a small, lingering difficulty that comes from not correcting course

Asking about work, love or money

Work
A project or post looks tempting, but you don't know the way in and no one is guiding you; chase it and you will only get lost. Pull back early; burrow in further and it will end in embarrassment.
Love
You are set on holding on to the other person, but you don't really understand their mind, and no one is helping you see clearly. The more you chase, the deeper you sink. When you see it isn't right, let it go; chasing on will only cost you face and hurt you.
Money
Chances at fast money are what people pounce on most easily. If you don't know the trade and no one is checking for you, you are just chasing blindly through the woods. When things look wrong, let go; don't keep chasing in just because you can't bear to give up.

This is how to read it when this is the only changing line. With several changing lines, first see which text governs; for the hexagram as a whole, see Zhun.

Line position

A yin line in a yang place: it is not in its proper place. Its partner is the top line, which is also yin, so there is no answer from it.

Third place: the top of the lower trigram, a place of risk. A moment of transition. Be on guard.
