豫Yu · Enthusiasm
In one sentence
People are willing and the mood is good. It suits getting everyone moving on something, but don't get lost in feeling pleased.
A glad, smooth-running situation in which people are willing to move along with you. Comfort also easily makes people slack. While people are of one mind, get things organized. Keep your own head clear and don't sink into the comfort.
Asking about work, love or money
- Work
- People are willing, the mood is good, and everyone is ready to move with you, like spring thunder coming out of the earth. It is a good time to set up projects, form teams and get everyone working; while people are of one mind, get things organized. You yourself must stay clear-headed. Do not let a chorus of approval go to your head; stay comfortable too long and people go slack.
- Love
- You enjoy each other's company and the mood is happy. It is a good time to do something together and carry the relationship a step forward. If you are single, it is also easy to meet people in lively settings. Just do not go after pleasure alone, sinking into comfort and novelty and not thinking about what matters. The happier you are, the more clearly you should look at this person and this relationship.
- Money
- When the mood is good and people are of one mind, it suits you to organize the business and bring everyone along to work at it. But a happy time is when it is easiest to lose count of what you spend, and easiest to drop your guard. Do not sink into enjoyment, and do not spend freely on a passing impulse. Keep your hand tight and your mind awake.
This is the hexagram as a whole. If your cast has changing lines, the line text governs; each line's page has its own reading for work, love and money.
The judgment
In plain wordsPeople's hearts are glad and in harmony, and above and below respond to each other. It is favorable for laying a foundation and for mobilizing people to get things done.
The Tuan commentary
豫,剛應而志行,順以動,豫。豫,順以動,故天地如之,而況建侯行師乎?天地以順動,故日月不過,而四時不忒;聖人以順動,則刑罰清而民服。豫之時義大矣哉!
Yu: the firm is answered and its purpose is carried out. Compliance, and so movement: Yu. Yu moves through compliance; so heaven and earth are like this too, and how much more "to appoint lords and move the army"? Heaven and earth move through compliance; so the sun and moon do not stray, and the four seasons do not err. The sage moves through compliance; so punishments are clear and the people submit. Great indeed is the meaning of the time of Yu!
The Tuan (“judgment”) commentary is one of the Ten Wings. It explains the hexagram name and the judgment from the two trigrams and the positions of the lines.
