Lin, six in the third placeHexagram 19, line 3 · Lin (Approach) · changing to 11
The line
In plain wordsDealing with people through nice words and a pleasant face does no good at all. But if you are already worried about it and willing to change, there is no blame.
The Image commentary on this line
甘臨,位不當也。既憂之,咎不長也。
"Sweet approach": the place is not proper. "Once one worries over it", the blame does not last.
The small Image commentary is the earliest explanation of the line texts. It usually explains a line from its position: where it stands, whether it holds the center, and which line answers it.
Verdict
慎Proceed with care. The text speaks of misfortune and also says it can be avoided. The danger lies in rushing and forcing. Stay steady, correct mistakes, and the bad outcome can be escaped.

Asking about work, love or money
- Work
- Leading people and getting things done by saying nice things and pleasing everyone does no good at all. It is good that you have noticed something is wrong. Switch quickly to doing things for real, and the problem will not last long.
- Love
- Getting by on sweet talk and coaxing the other person along won't win you real feeling; it only grows emptier. Once you see it, change: say fewer nice things and do more real ones. There is still time.
- Money
- Using sweet talk, connections and pleasant promises to bring in business or borrow money does you no good. When you see it is not right, stop, keep your words honest and your numbers real, and you will not go wrong.
This is how to read it when this is the only changing line. With several changing lines, first see which text governs; for the hexagram as a whole, see Lin.
Line position
A yin line in a yang place: it is not in its proper place. Its partner is the top line, which is also yin, so there is no answer from it.
Third place: the top of the lower trigram, a place of risk. A moment of transition. Be on guard.
When you get this line
If this is the only changing line in your cast (three inscribed sides, old yin), this line is your answer. The primary hexagram is Lin (Approach); when this line changes it becomes Tai (Peace): hexagram 19 changing to 11.
