Bi, nine at the beginningHexagram 22, line 1 · Bi (Adornment) · changing to 52
The line
In plain wordsAdorning only your own feet: not riding the carriage you shouldn't ride, and walking instead. Stand on your own proper footing and don't borrow a glory that isn't rightfully yours.
The Image commentary on this line
舍車而徒,義弗乘也。
"He leaves the carriage and walks": by what is right he does not ride.
The small Image commentary is the earliest explanation of the line texts. It usually explains a line from its position: where it stands, whether it holds the center, and which line answers it.
Verdict
平Neutral. The text gives no verdict, only an image. Ask what in your situation the image resembles. The answer is there.

Asking about work, love or money
- Work
- Don't reach for a position, title or perk that isn't rightfully yours. Better to walk your own way step by step and stand on real ability. Don't borrow glory you shouldn't, and you will not go wrong.
- Love
- Don't raise yourself up with someone else's glory, and don't use what isn't yours to attract the other person. Be yourself plainly and simply, take it one step at a time, and your footing will be sure.
- Money
- If there are dubious gains to be had, or someone offers to take you down a shortcut, turn it all down. Better to go a little slower and earn your money honestly on your own, and don't spend for show either.
This is how to read it when this is the only changing line. With several changing lines, first see which text governs; for the hexagram as a whole, see Bi.
Line position
A yang line in a yang place: it is in its proper place. Its partner is the fourth line, which is its opposite, so the two answer each other.
First place: the beginning of the matter. Low position, little power. Begin carefully.
When you get this line
If this is the only changing line in your cast (three backs, old yang), this line is your answer. The primary hexagram is Bi (Adornment); when this line changes it becomes Gen (Stillness): hexagram 22 changing to 52.
