Bi, six in the fourth placeHexagram 22, line 4 · Bi (Adornment) · changing to 30
The line
In plain wordsAll in plain white, galloping up on a white horse. The one you want to join is cut off from you by someone in between, and your heart races as if flying. But the one in the way is not a robber; he too has come seeking a match.
The Image commentary on this line
六四,當位疑也。匪寇婚媾,終无尤也。
The six in the fourth place: in its proper place, yet in doubt. "Not a robber, but a suitor": in the end there is no reproach.
The small Image commentary is the earliest explanation of the line texts. It usually explains a line from its position: where it stands, whether it holds the center, and which line answers it.
Verdict
吉Favorable. The text gives no verdict, but the picture it paints is a hopeful one. Act the way it describes and there will be something to gain.

Asking about work, love or money
- Work
- You want to join up with the right people or the right direction, but a person or an obstacle stands in between, and you are frantic with impatience. Don't rush to be suspicious; that person is not necessarily there to oppose you. Go forward plainly and sincerely, and in the end there is no problem.
- Love
- You long to get closer to the other person, but their family, friends or other things stand in the way, leaving you anxious and suspicious. Whoever is in between may not be out to split you up, and may want to be on good terms with you. Stay plain and sincere; in the end there is nothing to resent.
- Money
- You want to move a deal forward, but a person or a procedure suddenly appears in between and makes you suspicious. Don't assume they are out to grab from you or cheat you; they may be there to do business too. Find out what they want, act plainly, and in the end all is well.
This is how to read it when this is the only changing line. With several changing lines, first see which text governs; for the hexagram as a whole, see Bi.
Line position
A yin line in a yin place: it is in its proper place. Its partner is the first line, which is its opposite, so the two answer each other.
Fourth place: next to the ruler, a place of caution. Serve those above with care.
When you get this line
If this is the only changing line in your cast (three inscribed sides, old yin), this line is your answer. The primary hexagram is Bi (Adornment); when this line changes it becomes Li (Clinging Fire): hexagram 22 changing to 30.
