Mingyi, nine at the beginningHexagram 36, line 1 · Mingyi (Darkened Light) · changing to 15
The line
In plain wordsA wounded bird flies with its wings hanging low. The noble one is on the road and for three days has no time to eat. Where you are headed, the host will have talk about you. Such are the times; it cannot be avoided.
The Image commentary on this line
君子于行,義不食也。
"The noble one on the road": by what is right, he does not eat.
The small Image commentary is the earliest explanation of the line texts. It usually explains a line from its position: where it stands, whether it holds the center, and which line answers it.
Verdict
慎Proceed with care. The text gives no verdict, but the picture holds an obstacle and a warning. Slow down and watch the point it warns about.

Asking about work, love or money
- Work
- The moment things start to look wrong, leave early, even if it means giving up this income and leaving in a sorry state. Wherever you go, people may talk. That is the times, and it can't be avoided; don't turn back because of it.
- Love
- As soon as you sense something is wrong, step back first, even if it means being lonely for a while or taking some hurt. Others, or the other person, will talk; that can't be avoided. Don't stay just to save face.
- Money
- Once you see things turning bad, get out early, even if it means taking less and swallowing a loss first. People are bound to gossip when you leave; don't let their talk keep you there.
This is how to read it when this is the only changing line. With several changing lines, first see which text governs; for the hexagram as a whole, see Mingyi.
Line position
A yang line in a yang place: it is in its proper place. Its partner is the fourth line, which is its opposite, so the two answer each other.
First place: the beginning of the matter. Low position, little power. Begin carefully.
When you get this line
If this is the only changing line in your cast (three backs, old yang), this line is your answer. The primary hexagram is Mingyi (Darkened Light); when this line changes it becomes Qian (Humility): hexagram 36 changing to 15.
