Jiaren, nine in the third placeHexagram 37, line 3 · Jiaren (The Family) · changing to 42
The line
In plain wordsThe family is governed so strictly that everyone groans. There is regret and there is danger, yet it is good fortune. If wife and children laugh and fool around all day with no rules, it ends in humiliation.
The Image commentary on this line
家人嗃嗃,未失也;婦子嘻嘻,失家節也。
"The household is ruled with harsh scolding": nothing has been lost yet. "Wife and children giggle and chatter": the discipline of the household is lost.
The small Image commentary is the earliest explanation of the line texts. It usually explains a line from its position: where it stands, whether it holds the center, and which line answers it.

Asking about work, love or money
- Work
- Being strict with the team and with yourself will make people groan, and you may feel some regret and unease, but it keeps you from serious mistakes. Let everyone fool around with no rules, and in the end you are the one left embarrassed.
- Love
- Between the two of you, better for the rules to be a little strict. A few arguments and a few awkward days won't send you off course. If you let everything slide and just drift along with no sense of limits, it ends in embarrassment.
- Money
- If you keep household money tight, people will call you stingy and you may feel uneasy, but you won't go wrong this way. If you let everyone spend whatever they like, it only ends in hardship and embarrassment.
This is how to read it when this is the only changing line. With several changing lines, first see which text governs; for the hexagram as a whole, see Jiaren.
Line position
A yang line in a yang place: it is in its proper place. Its partner is the top line, which is also yang, so there is no answer from it.
Third place: the top of the lower trigram, a place of risk. A moment of transition. Be on guard.
When you get this line
