Guai, nine in the fourth placeHexagram 43, line 4 · Guai (Resolution) · changing to 5

The line

Text臀无膚,其行次且。牽羊悔亡,聞言不信。No skin on the buttocks; walking falters. Lead the sheep, and regret vanishes. Hearing these words, one does not believe.

In plain wordsNo flesh on your buttocks: you cannot sit still, and you walk haltingly, inching along. Like someone herding sheep, let others walk in front and follow behind them, and regret will vanish — sadly, you will hear this and still not believe it.

The Image commentary on this line

其行次且,位不當也。聞言不信,聰不明也。

"Walking falters": it is not in its proper place. "Hearing these words, one does not believe": the hearing is not clear.

The small Image commentary is the earliest explanation of the line texts. It usually explains a line from its position: where it stands, whether it holds the center, and which line answers it.

Verdict

平Neutral. Neither good nor bad. Do your part, correct mistakes, and nothing will go wrong.

Asking about work, love or money

Work
You can't sit still and you can't move smoothly; your position is a bit awkward to begin with. Don't race everyone else to the front: let the right person lead and put your effort in from behind, and you will have nothing to regret. Really take this to heart.
Love
You feel unsettled; you want to move things forward but can't take the step. Don't insist on leading: let the other person set the pace and go along with it, and things go more smoothly. When the people around you tell you to slow down, don't be quick to brush it off.
Money
When you are restless and want to act but can't decide, don't rush to make the call, and don't force yourself to decide alone. Let someone who knows the business better take the lead and follow along at an easy pace, and you will have nothing to regret.

This is how to read it when this is the only changing line. With several changing lines, first see which text governs; for the hexagram as a whole, see Guai.

Line position

A yang line in a yin place: it is not in its proper place. Its partner is the first line, which is also yang, so there is no answer from it.

Fourth place: next to the ruler, a place of caution. Serve those above with care.
