Cui, nine in the fourth placeHexagram 45, line 4 · Cui (Gathering) · changing to 8
The line
In plain wordsOnly by achieving great good fortune are you free of blame. You can gather people both above and below you, but your position is not quite right, so you have to do extremely well.
The Image commentary on this line
大吉无咎,位不當也。
"Great good fortune; no blame": it is not in its proper place.
The small Image commentary is the earliest explanation of the line texts. It usually explains a line from its position: where it stands, whether it holds the center, and which line answers it.
Verdict
吉Favorable. This text describes a good outcome. Act the way it says and the matter can succeed. The promise has a condition: keep to the right course.

Asking about work, love or money
- Work
- You can rally people both above and below you, and your pull is considerable, but yours is not the seat where decisions are made. You can go ahead, but you must do it beautifully and beyond reproach; only then will you stand firm.
- Love
- You are well liked, and friends and family are all willing to gather around you and speak up for you; that is a good thing. But your place is not fully settled yet, so do everything with extra care, and no one will have grounds to talk.
- Money
- Resources and people are gathering around you, and things can get done. But not all of it is yours, so the accounts and the sharing-out must be perfectly clear and fair; only by doing extremely well do you avoid any slip.
This is how to read it when this is the only changing line. With several changing lines, first see which text governs; for the hexagram as a whole, see Cui.
Line position
A yang line in a yin place: it is not in its proper place. Its partner is the first line, which is its opposite, so the two answer each other.
Fourth place: next to the ruler, a place of caution. Serve those above with care.
When you get this line
If this is the only changing line in your cast (three backs, old yang), this line is your answer. The primary hexagram is Cui (Gathering); when this line changes it becomes Bi (Alliance): hexagram 45 changing to 8.
