Pi, six in the third placeHexagram 12, line 3 · Pi (Standstill) · changing to 33
The line
In plain wordsHarboring thoughts that cannot bear the light; wanting to harm someone but not yet having managed it.
The Image commentary on this line
包羞,位不當也。
"Shame held within": the place is not proper.
The small Image commentary is the earliest explanation of the line texts. It usually explains a line from its position: where it stands, whether it holds the center, and which line answers it.
Verdict
止Hold back. The text gives no verdict, but the picture is a bad one. Carry on as you are and you will lose by it. Stop, step aside, or change your approach.

Asking about work, love or money
- Work
- If you are secretly planning something you could never admit to, like tripping someone up or stealing their credit, stop now, while it has not happened; even if it worked, it would be shameful.
- Love
- If you are hiding thoughts you could not show anyone, of getting back at the other person, testing them, or scheming against them in secret, drop them now, before you act on them. Harboring such thoughts is already something to be ashamed of.
- Money
- If you are thinking of something crooked, like taking advantage of people or fiddling the books, stop right now, before you make a move. Money gotten that way cannot bear the light of day. Don't touch it.
This is how to read it when this is the only changing line. With several changing lines, first see which text governs; for the hexagram as a whole, see Pi.
Line position
A yin line in a yang place: it is not in its proper place. Its partner is the top line, which is its opposite, so the two answer each other.
Third place: the top of the lower trigram, a place of risk. A moment of transition. Be on guard.
When you get this line
If this is the only changing line in your cast (three inscribed sides, old yin), this line is your answer. The primary hexagram is Pi (Standstill); when this line changes it becomes Dun (Retreat): hexagram 12 changing to 33.
