Pi, nine in the fifth placeHexagram 12, line 5 · Pi (Standstill) · changing to 35
The line
In plain wordsThe blocked situation is brought to a stop; a person of virtue who meets this has good fortune. But you must keep thinking at every moment 'it is about to be lost, it is about to be lost,' and only then will it be as secure as something tied to the roots of a mulberry tree.
The Image commentary on this line
大人之吉,位正當也。
The good fortune of the great person: the place is correct and proper.
The small Image commentary is the earliest explanation of the line texts. It usually explains a line from its position: where it stands, whether it holds the center, and which line answers it.
Verdict
吉Favorable. This text describes a good outcome. Act the way it says and the matter can succeed. The promise has a condition: keep to the right course.

Asking about work, love or money
- Work
- The deadlock is yours to break now; you have the position and the weight to do it. But at a time like this, keep asking yourself what could go wrong, and keep a fallback everywhere; that is what holds the situation steady.
- Love
- You can be the one to loosen what has been stuck in your love life; if you are willing to reach out first, that is good. But even once things improve, keep in mind that it could be lost; that is what makes you cherish it, and what makes the good last.
- Money
- The hardest stretch can be brought to a halt now, and you have what it takes to turn it around. But the better it gets, the more you should act as if it could slip away at any time: keep enough in reserve and don't rush ahead. That is what makes it secure.
This is how to read it when this is the only changing line. With several changing lines, first see which text governs; for the hexagram as a whole, see Pi.
Line position
A yang line in a yang place: it is in its proper place; it holds the center of its trigram. Its partner is the second line, which is its opposite, so the two answer each other.
Fifth place: the center of the upper trigram, the ruler's seat, a place of achievement. This is where things are decided.
When you get this line
If this is the only changing line in your cast (three backs, old yang), this line is your answer. The primary hexagram is Pi (Standstill); when this line changes it becomes Jin (Advance): hexagram 12 changing to 35.
