Tongren, nine in the fifth placeHexagram 13, line 5 · Tongren (Fellowship) · changing to 30
The line
In plain wordsFirst loud wailing, later tears turning to laughter. Two people of one heart have been cut off from each other by those in between, and it takes great effort before they can meet — but those who are truly of one heart cannot be kept apart by anyone.
The Image commentary on this line
同人之先,以中直也。大師相遇,言相剋也。
Those in fellowship "first" wail: because he is centered and straight. "The great army" comes and they "meet": this says that he has prevailed.
The small Image commentary is the earliest explanation of the line texts. It usually explains a line from its position: where it stands, whether it holds the center, and which line answers it.
Verdict
吉Favorable. The text gives no verdict, but the picture it paints is a hopeful one. Act the way it describes and there will be something to gain.

Asking about work, love or money
- Work
- You and the people you truly want to work with have been cut off from each other by people or obstacles in between, and for now it is frustrating. If your direction is right, put real effort into breaking through; first hardship, then laughter, and in the end you come together.
- Love
- Two people who truly care for each other have been kept apart by people or things in between, and it hurts enough to make you cry. If your heart is upright and true, don't give up; push hard to get across. First tears, then laughter; no one can keep true hearts apart.
- Money
- You and your partners are of one mind, but middlemen and the steps in between have jammed things up, and it keeps dragging on. If your case is sound, work hard to clear away what stands in between; a partnership of true minds cannot be broken apart.
This is how to read it when this is the only changing line. With several changing lines, first see which text governs; for the hexagram as a whole, see Tongren.
Line position
A yang line in a yang place: it is in its proper place; it holds the center of its trigram. Its partner is the second line, which is its opposite, so the two answer each other.
Fifth place: the center of the upper trigram, the ruler's seat, a place of achievement. This is where things are decided.
