Kui, six in the third placeHexagram 38, line 3 · Kui (Opposition) · changing to 14
The line
In plain wordsYou see the cart being dragged backward, the ox being hauled forward, the driver with his head shaved and his nose cut off. You are held in check from in front and from behind, and the other party is deeply suspicious. A bad beginning, but in the end you come together.
The Image commentary on this line
見輿曳,位不當也。无初有終,遇剛也。
"One sees the cart dragged back": it is not in its proper place. "No beginning, but there is an end": it meets the firm.
The small Image commentary is the earliest explanation of the line texts. It usually explains a line from its position: where it stands, whether it holds the center, and which line answers it.
Verdict
慎Proceed with care. The text gives no verdict, but the picture holds an obstacle and a warning. Slow down and watch the point it warns about.

Asking about work, love or money
- Work
- You are held in check from both sides; whatever you try, someone drags you back or yanks you forward, and you have been wronged too. The start is hard, but don't give up. Hold your ground, and in the end you can come together with the right people.
- Love
- All sorts of things are pulling and dragging at the two of you, others are interfering, and the other person is deeply suspicious; the start is painful. Don't rush to give up or fall out. If your hearts are in the right place, you still have a chance to come together in the end.
- Money
- The partnership is held up on every side, the money is stuck, and the other party doesn't trust you; you are losing out at the start. Bear with it for now, lay out the accounts and your good faith clearly, and you can still reach agreement later.
This is how to read it when this is the only changing line. With several changing lines, first see which text governs; for the hexagram as a whole, see Kui.
Line position
A yin line in a yang place: it is not in its proper place. Its partner is the top line, which is its opposite, so the two answer each other.
Third place: the top of the lower trigram, a place of risk. A moment of transition. Be on guard.
When you get this line
If this is the only changing line in your cast (three inscribed sides, old yin), this line is your answer. The primary hexagram is Kui (Opposition); when this line changes it becomes Dayou (Great Possession): hexagram 38 changing to 14.
