Kui, nine at the topHexagram 38, line 6 · Kui (Opposition) · changing to 54
The line
In plain wordsAll alone and full of suspicion: you see a pig plastered with mud, you see a cartload of ghosts. First you draw the bow to shoot, then you lower it — it turns out they are no robbers; they have come to join with you in marriage. Go forward, and meeting a fall of rain brings good fortune: the suspicions are all washed away.
The Image commentary on this line
遇雨之吉,群疑亡也。
The good fortune of "meeting rain": all the doubts vanish.
The small Image commentary is the earliest explanation of the line texts. It usually explains a line from its position: where it stands, whether it holds the center, and which line answers it.
Verdict
吉Favorable. This text describes a good outcome. Act the way it says and the matter can succeed. The promise has a condition: keep to the right course.

Asking about work, love or money
- Work
- Your suspicion runs so high that you have painted your colleagues and partners as monsters and nearly fell out with them. Lower your guard and talk face to face. They are very likely not out to harm you but to help you. Once the suspicion clears, things become easy to handle.
- Love
- Alone with your thoughts, you have made the other person into the villain and nearly said something hurtful. Hold those words back and talk it out face to face. Most likely they sincerely want to be close to you. Once the suspicion is washed away, as if by rain, all is well.
- Money
- Full of suspicion, you see everyone as out to cheat you of your money, and you have almost driven people away. Stop, and ask face to face about the accounts and what they really want. They may well have come to work with you in good faith; once the suspicion clears, things go smoothly.
This is how to read it when this is the only changing line. With several changing lines, first see which text governs; for the hexagram as a whole, see Kui.
Line position
A yang line in a yin place: it is not in its proper place. Its partner is the third line, which is its opposite, so the two answer each other.
Top place: the end of the matter. What reaches its limit turns. Know when to stop.
When you get this line
If this is the only changing line in your cast (three backs, old yang), this line is your answer. The primary hexagram is Kui (Opposition); when this line changes it becomes Guimei (The Marrying Maiden): hexagram 38 changing to 54.
