Kun, six in the second placeHexagram 2, line 2 · Kun (Earth) · changing to 7
The line
In plain wordsUpright, square, generous. This is simply your nature; you don't need to study anything or work at anything deliberately, and whatever you do goes well.
The Image commentary on this line
六二之動,直以方也。不習无不利,地道光也。
The movement of the six in the second place is straight, and so square. "Without practice, there is nothing that is not favorable": the way of the earth shines.
The small Image commentary is the earliest explanation of the line texts. It usually explains a line from its position: where it stands, whether it holds the center, and which line answers it.
Verdict
吉Favorable. This text describes a good outcome. Act the way it says and the matter can succeed. The promise has a condition: keep to the right course.

Asking about work, love or money
- Work
- You don't need to work out clever moves or deliberately cultivate connections. Be upright, keep to the rules, and be broad-minded; do things the way you naturally are, and they go smoothly.
- Love
- In love you don't need to learn any tricks or put effort into calculating. Be frank, sincere, and measured, and be generous with the other person. No need to pretend; things go smoothly on their own.
- Money
- Let money come by the straight road: take what is yours, leave alone what isn't, keep your word, and keep your accounts clear. You don't need to hunt for clever angles; the straight road gets you through anywhere.
This is how to read it when this is the only changing line. With several changing lines, first see which text governs; for the hexagram as a whole, see Kun.
Line position
A yin line in a yin place: it is in its proper place; it holds the center of its trigram. Its partner is the fifth line, which is also yin, so there is no answer from it.
Second place: the center of the lower trigram, a place of praise. Stay centered and yielding.
When you get this line
If this is the only changing line in your cast (three inscribed sides, old yin), this line is your answer. The primary hexagram is Kun (Earth); when this line changes it becomes Shi (The Army): hexagram 2 changing to 7.
