Lü, nine in the third placeHexagram 56, line 3 · Lü (The Wanderer) · changing to 35
The line
In plain wordsThe inn you are staying in burns down, and your servant turns against you and leaves. You have lost not only his loyalty but the man himself. Danger. This is what comes of still being so hard and haughty when you are away from home.
The Image commentary on this line
旅焚其次,亦以傷矣。以旅與下,其義喪也。
"The wanderer's lodging burns down": this too is a wound. As a wanderer he deals in this way with those below; by what is right, he loses them.
The small Image commentary is the earliest explanation of the line texts. It usually explains a line from its position: where it stands, whether it holds the center, and which line answers it.
Verdict
慎Proceed with care. There is some risk, or some regret left over, but nothing serious. Notice it early, correct it early, and things turn for the better.

Asking about work, love or money
- Work
- In a new place you are still putting on airs and being hard and harsh on the people under you; as a result your position is shaky, and those who helped you are leaving. This is dangerous. Get off your high horse quickly and treat the people around you well.
- Love
- You are too hard and too proud, and you don't take the other person's feelings seriously. Go on like this and you will lose both their heart and the person. This is dangerous. Rein in your temper and truly treasure the other person.
- Money
- Being stingy and arrogant with the people who help you while you are away from home will cost you both your foothold and your helpers. That is dangerous. Pay people fully what they are owed, be courteous, and don't burn your own way back.
This is how to read it when this is the only changing line. With several changing lines, first see which text governs; for the hexagram as a whole, see Lü.
Line position
A yang line in a yang place: it is in its proper place. Its partner is the top line, which is also yang, so there is no answer from it.
Third place: the top of the lower trigram, a place of risk. A moment of transition. Be on guard.
When you get this line
If this is the only changing line in your cast (three backs, old yang), this line is your answer. The primary hexagram is Lü (The Wanderer); when this line changes it becomes Jin (Advance): hexagram 56 changing to 35.
