The judgment and line statements of all sixty-four hexagrams in the received order, the Chinese original beside a literal translation. For the plain readings and the commentaries, open a hexagram.

Part one

The first part has thirty hexagrams, from Qian and Kun to Kan and Li.

1 Qian (Heaven) 乾Heaven doubled

Judgment元亨利貞。Great success. It is favorable to stay true.

Nine at the beginning潛龍勿用。Hidden dragon. Do not act.

Nine in the second place見龍在田,利見大人。A dragon appears in the field. It is favorable to see the great person.

Nine in the third place君子終日乾乾,夕惕若,厲无咎。The noble one is hard at work all day long, and at evening still on guard. Danger. No blame.

Nine in the fourth place或躍在淵,无咎。Perhaps leaping, still in the deep. No blame.

Nine in the fifth place飛龍在天,利見大人。A dragon flying in the sky. It is favorable to see the great person.

Nine at the top亢龍有悔。A dragon that has flown too high. There will be regret.

All nines見群龍无首,吉。A host of dragons appears, and none pushes to the head. Good fortune.

2 Kun (Earth) 坤Earth doubled

Judgment元亨,利牝馬之貞。君子有攸往,先迷後得主,利。西南得朋,東北喪朋。安貞吉。Great success. It is favorable to stay true as a mare does. The noble one has somewhere to go: going first, one gets lost; following, one finds a master. Favorable. In the southwest, friends are gained; in the northeast, friends are lost. Calmly staying true brings good fortune.

Six at the beginning履霜,堅冰至。Treading on frost. Solid ice is on its way.

Six in the second place直方大,不習无不利。Straight, square, great. Without practice, there is nothing that is not favorable.

Six in the third place含章可貞。或從王事,无成有終。Brilliance held within; one can stay true. If you serve in the king's affairs, claim no achievement, and see things through to the end.

Six in the fourth place括囊,无咎无譽。A sack tied shut. No blame, no praise.

Six in the fifth place黃裳,元吉。A yellow lower garment. Supreme good fortune.

Six at the top龍戰于野,其血玄黃。Dragons fight in the open country. Their blood is dark and yellow.

All sixes利永貞。It is favorable to stay true forever.

3 Zhun (Difficult Beginnings) 屯Water over Thunder

Judgment元亨利貞。勿用有攸往,利建侯。Great success. It is favorable to stay true. Do not go anywhere. It is favorable to appoint lords.

Nine at the beginning磐桓,利居貞,利建侯。Circling on the spot. It is favorable to stay put and stay true. It is favorable to appoint lords.

Six in the second place屯如邅如,乘馬班如。匪寇婚媾,女子貞不字,十年乃字。Stuck and turning back, the horses mounted yet milling about. Not a robber but a suitor. The young woman stays true and does not give her word; after ten years she gives it.

Six in the third place即鹿无虞,惟入于林中。君子幾不如舍,往吝。Chasing deer without a guide, one only ends up deep in the forest. The noble one reads the signs: better to give up. Going on brings humiliation.

Six in the fourth place乘馬班如,求婚媾。往吉,无不利。The horses mounted yet milling about. Seek the marriage alliance. Going brings good fortune. Nothing that is not favorable.

Nine in the fifth place屯其膏,小貞吉,大貞凶。His bounty is held up. In small things, staying true brings good fortune; in great things, persisting brings misfortune.

Six at the top乘馬班如,泣血漣如。The horses mounted yet milling about. Tears of blood stream down.

4 Meng (Youthful Ignorance) 蒙Mountain over Water

Judgment亨。匪我求童蒙,童蒙求我。初筮告,再三瀆,瀆則不告。利貞。Success. It is not I who seek the ignorant child; the ignorant child seeks me. At the first divination I answer. To ask a second and third time is disrespect, and disrespect gets no answer. It is favorable to stay true.

Six at the beginning發蒙,利用刑人,用說桎梏,以往吝。Opening up the ignorant. It is favorable to use punishment, and then to take off the shackles. To go on that way brings humiliation.

Nine in the second place包蒙吉,納婦吉,子克家。Bearing with the ignorant: good fortune. Taking a wife: good fortune. The son can carry the household.

Six in the third place勿用取女,見金夫,不有躬,无攸利。Do not take this woman. She sees a man of gold and loses hold of herself. Nothing is favorable.

Six in the fourth place困蒙,吝。Trapped in ignorance. Humiliation.

Six in the fifth place童蒙,吉。The ignorance of a child. Good fortune.

Nine at the top擊蒙,不利為寇,利禦寇。Striking at ignorance. It is not favorable to act as a robber; it is favorable to fend off robbers.

5 Xu (Waiting) 需Water over Heaven

Judgment有孚,光亨,貞吉。利涉大川。There is sincerity. Bright success. Staying true brings good fortune. It is favorable to cross the great river.

Nine at the beginning需于郊,利用恆,无咎。Waiting on the outskirts. It is favorable to keep to the usual. No blame.

Nine in the second place需于沙,小有言,終吉。Waiting on the sand. There is a little talk. Good fortune in the end.

Nine in the third place需于泥,致寇至。Waiting in the mud. This invites the robbers to come.

Six in the fourth place需于血,出自穴。Waiting in blood. Getting out of the pit.

Nine in the fifth place需于酒食,貞吉。Waiting with wine and food. Staying true brings good fortune.

Six at the top入于穴,有不速之客三人來,敬之終吉。Entering the pit. Three uninvited guests arrive. Treat them with respect, and there is good fortune in the end.

6 Song (Conflict) 訟Heaven over Water

Judgment有孚窒惕,中吉,終凶。利見大人,不利涉大川。There is sincerity, but it is blocked. Be on guard. Stopping midway brings good fortune; carrying it to the end brings misfortune. It is favorable to see the great person. It is not favorable to cross the great river.

Six at the beginning不永所事,小有言,終吉。Not dragging the matter out. There is a little talk. Good fortune in the end.

Nine in the second place不克訟,歸而逋,其邑人三百戶,无眚。Unable to win the dispute, he goes home and slips away. His town is one of three hundred households. No harm comes.

Six in the third place食舊德,貞厲,終吉。或從王事,无成。Living on old virtue. Persisting is dangerous; good fortune in the end. If you serve in the king's affairs, there is no achievement.

Nine in the fourth place不克訟,復即命,渝安貞,吉。Unable to win the dispute. Turn back and submit to what is right; change, and calmly stay true. Good fortune.

Nine in the fifth place訟,元吉。Bringing the dispute. Supreme good fortune.

Nine at the top或錫之鞶帶,終朝三褫之。Perhaps a belt of honor is bestowed on him. Before the morning is over it is stripped from him three times.

7 Shi (The Army) 師Earth over Water

Judgment貞,丈人吉,无咎。Stay true. With a seasoned elder in command, good fortune. No blame.

Six at the beginning師出以律,否臧凶。An army sets out under discipline. If the order is not good, misfortune.

Nine in the second place在師中,吉无咎,王三錫命。In the midst of the army. Good fortune, no blame. The king confers his command three times.

Six in the third place師或輿尸,凶。The army may cart back corpses. Misfortune.

Six in the fourth place師左次,无咎。The army camps in retreat. No blame.

Six in the fifth place田有禽,利執言,无咎。長子帥師,弟子輿尸,貞凶。There is game in the field. It is favorable to seize it. No blame. The eldest son leads the army. If the younger sons cart corpses, persisting brings misfortune.

Six at the top大君有命,開國承家,小人勿用。The great ruler issues his commands: states are founded, houses are granted. Do not employ petty people.

8 Bi (Alliance) 比Water over Earth

Judgment吉。原筮元永貞,无咎。不寧方來,後夫凶。Good fortune. Consult the oracle once more: if there is goodness, constancy and staying true, no blame. Those who were not at ease now come. The latecomer meets misfortune.

Six at the beginning有孚比之,无咎。有孚盈缶,終來有它,吉。With sincerity, draw close to him. No blame. Sincerity fills the earthen jar. In the end something more comes from elsewhere. Good fortune.

Six in the second place比之自內,貞吉。Drawing close from within. Staying true brings good fortune.

Six in the third place比之匪人。Drawing close to the wrong people.

Six in the fourth place外比之,貞吉。Drawing close to one outside. Staying true brings good fortune.

Nine in the fifth place顯比,王用三驅,失前禽。邑人不誡,吉。Closeness shown in the open. The king drives the game from three sides and lets those in front escape. The townspeople need no warning. Good fortune.

Six at the top比之无首,凶。Drawing close with no head. Misfortune.

9 Xiaoxu (Small Restraint) 小畜Wind over Heaven

Judgment亨。密雲不雨,自我西郊。Success. Dense clouds but no rain, coming from our western outskirts.

Nine at the beginning復自道,何其咎,吉。Returning by one's own path. What blame could there be? Good fortune.

Nine in the second place牽復,吉。Drawn back hand in hand. Good fortune.

Nine in the third place輿說輻,夫妻反目。The spokes come off the cart. Husband and wife glare at each other.

Six in the fourth place有孚,血去惕出,无咎。There is sincerity. Blood goes away and fear departs. No blame.

Nine in the fifth place有孚攣如,富以其鄰。There is sincerity, binding all together. Wealth that carries the neighbors along.

Nine at the top既雨既處,尚德載。婦貞厲,月幾望,君子征凶。The rain has come and has settled. Virtue is honored until it fills the cart. For the wife, persisting is dangerous. The moon is nearly full. If the noble one sets forth, misfortune.

10 Lü (Treading) 履Heaven over Lake

Judgment履虎尾,不咥人,亨。Treading on the tiger's tail. It does not bite. Success.

Nine at the beginning素履,往无咎。Treading in plain simplicity. Going on brings no blame.

Nine in the second place履道坦坦,幽人貞吉。Treading a road level and smooth. For the one in seclusion, staying true brings good fortune.

Six in the third place眇能視,跛能履,履虎尾,咥人,凶。武人為于大君。The one-eyed thinks he can see, the lame thinks he can walk. He treads on the tiger's tail and it bites him. Misfortune. A warrior acting as a great ruler.

Nine in the fourth place履虎尾,愬愬終吉。Treading on the tiger's tail. Fearful and cautious: good fortune in the end.

Nine in the fifth place夬履,貞厲。Treading with sheer decisiveness. Persisting is dangerous.

Nine at the top視履考祥,其旋元吉。Look back over your steps and examine the signs. If the round is complete, supreme good fortune.

11 Tai (Peace) 泰Earth over Heaven

Judgment小往大來,吉亨。The small goes, the great comes. Good fortune. Success.

Nine at the beginning拔茅茹,以其彙,征吉。Pulling up thatch grass: the roots come up joined, each with its kind. Setting forth brings good fortune.

Nine in the second place包荒,用馮河,不遐遺,朋亡,得尚于中行。Bearing with the wasteland, fording the river on foot, not leaving out the distant, letting factions fall away: so one comes to match the middle way.

Nine in the third place无平不陂,无往不復。艱貞无咎。勿恤其孚,于食有福。No level ground without a slope, no going without a return. Staying true through hardship: no blame. Do not worry about whether it holds true. In what you eat there is blessing.

Six in the fourth place翩翩,不富以其鄰,不戒以孚。Fluttering down. Without wealth, yet carrying the neighbors along. Without being called, yet trusting.

Six in the fifth place帝乙歸妹,以祉元吉。King Yi gives his younger sister in marriage. This brings blessing and supreme good fortune.

Six at the top城復于隍,勿用師。自邑告命,貞吝。The city wall falls back into the moat. Do not use the army. Give orders only in your own town. Persisting brings humiliation.

12 Pi (Standstill) 否Heaven over Earth

Judgment否之匪人,不利君子貞,大往小來。Standstill: this is not the human way. It is not favorable for the noble one to stay true. The great goes, the small comes.

Six at the beginning拔茅茹,以其彙,貞吉亨。Pulling up thatch grass: the roots come up joined, each with its kind. Staying true brings good fortune and success.

Six in the second place包承,小人吉,大人否亨。Bearing and accepting. For petty people, good fortune. For the great person, keeping to the standstill brings success.

Six in the third place包羞。Shame held within.

Nine in the fourth place有命无咎,疇離祉。There is a mandate. No blame. The companions share in the blessing.

Nine in the fifth place休否,大人吉。其亡其亡,繫于苞桑。Bringing the standstill to a halt. For the great person, good fortune. 'It may be lost, it may be lost!' Tie it to the clustered mulberry.

Nine at the top傾否,先否後喜。The standstill is overturned. First standstill, then joy.

13 Tongren (Fellowship) 同人Heaven over Fire

Judgment同人于野,亨。利涉大川,利君子貞。Fellowship in the open country. Success. It is favorable to cross the great river. It is favorable for the noble one to stay true.

Nine at the beginning同人于門,无咎。Fellowship at the gate. No blame.

Six in the second place同人于宗,吝。Fellowship within the clan. Humiliation.

Nine in the third place伏戎于莽,升其高陵,三歲不興。He hides troops in the thicket and climbs the high hill. For three years he does not rise.

Nine in the fourth place乘其墉,弗克攻,吉。He mounts the wall but does not carry out the attack. Good fortune.

Nine in the fifth place同人先號咷而後笑,大師克相遇。Those in fellowship first wail and weep, then laugh. Only after the great army prevails do they meet.

Nine at the top同人于郊,无悔。Fellowship on the outskirts. No regret.

14 Dayou (Great Possession) 大有Fire over Heaven

Judgment元亨。Great success.

Nine at the beginning无交害,匪咎,艱則无咎。No contact with what harms. There is no blame in this. Treat it as hard, and there is no blame.

Nine in the second place大車以載,有攸往,无咎。A great wagon for loading. There is somewhere to go. No blame.

Nine in the third place公用亨于天子,小人弗克。A duke makes his offering to the Son of Heaven. A petty person cannot do this.

Nine in the fourth place匪其彭,无咎。Not using his fullness to the full. No blame.

Six in the fifth place厥孚交如,威如,吉。His sincerity is met in exchange, and he carries authority. Good fortune.

Nine at the top自天祐之,吉无不利。Heaven itself gives help. Good fortune. Nothing that is not favorable.

15 Qian (Humility) 謙Earth over Mountain

Judgment亨,君子有終。Success. The noble one reaches a good end.

Six at the beginning謙謙君子,用涉大川,吉。Humble upon humble, the noble one. Use this to cross the great river. Good fortune.

Six in the second place鳴謙,貞吉。Humility that sounds forth. Staying true brings good fortune.

Nine in the third place勞謙,君子有終,吉。Hard work and humility. The noble one reaches a good end. Good fortune.

Six in the fourth place无不利,撝謙。Nothing that is not favorable. Put humility forth still further.

Six in the fifth place不富以其鄰,利用侵伐,无不利。Without wealth, yet carrying the neighbors along. It is favorable to attack and invade. Nothing that is not favorable.

Six at the top鳴謙,利用行師,征邑國。Humility that sounds forth. It is favorable to move the army and march on one's own towns and domain.

16 Yu (Enthusiasm) 豫Thunder over Earth

Judgment利建侯行師。It is favorable to appoint lords and move the army.

Six at the beginning鳴豫,凶。Delight that sounds forth. Misfortune.

Six in the second place介于石,不終日,貞吉。Firm as a rock. Not waiting out the day. Staying true brings good fortune.

Six in the third place盱豫,悔。遲有悔。Gazing upward for delight: regret. Being slow brings regret.

Nine in the fourth place由豫,大有得。勿疑,朋盍簪。The source of delight. Great gains. Do not doubt. Friends gather like hair in a clasp.

Six in the fifth place貞疾,恆不死。A persistent illness, yet he goes on and does not die.

Six at the top冥豫,成有渝,无咎。Delight in the dark. What has become set can still change. No blame.

17 Sui (Following) 隨Lake over Thunder

Judgment元亨利貞,无咎。Great success. It is favorable to stay true. No blame.

Nine at the beginning官有渝,貞吉。出門交有功。What one held to changes. Staying true brings good fortune. Going out the gate to mix with others brings achievement.

Six in the second place係小子,失丈夫。Tied to the little boy, losing the grown man.

Six in the third place係丈夫,失小子。隨有求得,利居貞。Tied to the grown man, losing the little boy. Following, one gets what one seeks. It is favorable to stay put and stay true.

Nine in the fourth place隨有獲,貞凶。有孚在道,以明,何咎。Following brings gains. Persisting brings misfortune. With sincerity, on the right path, and with clarity: what blame could there be?

Nine in the fifth place孚于嘉,吉。Sincerity toward what is excellent. Good fortune.

Six at the top拘係之,乃從維之。王用亨于西山。Seized and bound, then tied fast as well. The king makes an offering on the Western Mountain.

18 Gu (Repairing Decay) 蠱Mountain over Wind

Judgment元亨,利涉大川。先甲三日,後甲三日。Great success. It is favorable to cross the great river. Three days before the first day, three days after the first day.

Six at the beginning幹父之蠱,有子,考无咎,厲終吉。Setting right what the father spoiled. There is a son, so the late father is without blame. Danger, but good fortune in the end.

Nine in the second place幹母之蠱,不可貞。Setting right what the mother spoiled. One must not persist.

Nine in the third place幹父之蠱,小有悔,无大咎。Setting right what the father spoiled. A little regret, no great blame.

Six in the fourth place裕父之蠱,往見吝。Indulging what the father spoiled. Going on, one meets humiliation.

Six in the fifth place幹父之蠱,用譽。Setting right what the father spoiled. One meets with praise.

Nine at the top不事王侯,高尚其事。He does not serve kings and lords. He holds his own pursuits high.

19 Lin (Approach) 臨Earth over Lake

Judgment元亨利貞。至于八月有凶。Great success. It is favorable to stay true. When the eighth month comes, there is misfortune.

Nine at the beginning咸臨,貞吉。Approaching through influence. Staying true brings good fortune.

Nine in the second place咸臨,吉无不利。Approaching through influence. Good fortune; nothing that is not favorable.

Six in the third place甘臨,无攸利。既憂之,无咎。Sweet approach. Nothing is favorable. Once one worries over it, no blame.

Six in the fourth place至臨,无咎。Approaching all the way. No blame.

Six in the fifth place知臨,大君之宜,吉。Approaching with wisdom. This befits a great ruler. Good fortune.

Six at the top敦臨,吉无咎。Generous approach. Good fortune, no blame.

20 Guan (Contemplation) 觀Wind over Earth

Judgment盥而不薦,有孚顒若。The hands are washed, the offering not yet made. There is sincerity, solemn and looked up to.

Six at the beginning童觀,小人无咎,君子吝。A child's view. For petty people, no blame; for the noble one, humiliation.

Six in the second place窺觀,利女貞。Peeping through the door. It is favorable for a woman to stay true.

Six in the third place觀我生,進退。Contemplating my own life, to advance or withdraw.

Six in the fourth place觀國之光,利用賓于王。Beholding the glory of the realm. It is favorable to be a guest of the king.

Nine in the fifth place觀我生,君子无咎。Contemplating my own life. The noble one is without blame.

Nine at the top觀其生,君子无咎。Contemplating his life. The noble one is without blame.

21 Shihe (Biting Through) 噬嗑Fire over Thunder

Judgment亨。利用獄。Success. It is favorable to apply the law.

Nine at the beginning屨校滅趾,无咎。Feet locked in the stocks, the toes covered. No blame.

Six in the second place噬膚滅鼻,无咎。Biting into soft flesh until the nose is buried. No blame.

Six in the third place噬臘肉,遇毒。小吝,无咎。Biting cured meat and meeting poison. Slight humiliation, no blame.

Nine in the fourth place噬乾胏,得金矢。利艱貞,吉。Biting dried meat on the bone, finding a metal arrowhead. It is favorable to stay true through hardship. Good fortune.

Six in the fifth place噬乾肉,得黃金。貞厲,无咎。Biting dried meat, finding yellow gold. Persisting is dangerous. No blame.

Nine at the top何校滅耳,凶。Shouldering a wooden collar that covers the ears. Misfortune.

22 Bi (Adornment) 賁Mountain over Fire

Judgment亨。小利有攸往。Success. In small things, it is favorable to have somewhere to go.

Nine at the beginning賁其趾,舍車而徒。Adorning his feet. He leaves the carriage and walks.

Six in the second place賁其須。Adorning his beard.

Nine in the third place賁如濡如,永貞吉。Adorned and glistening. Staying true for the long run brings good fortune.

Six in the fourth place賁如皤如,白馬翰如。匪寇婚媾。Adorned, yet plain white. A white horse, as if on wings. Not a robber, but a suitor.

Six in the fifth place賁于丘園,束帛戔戔。吝,終吉。Adornment in the hills and gardens. The roll of silk is meager. Humiliation, but good fortune in the end.

Nine at the top白賁,无咎。White adornment. No blame.

23 Bo (Splitting Apart) 剝Mountain over Earth

Judgment不利有攸往。It is not favorable to go anywhere.

Six at the beginning剝床以足,蔑貞凶。The bed is stripped at the legs. The true is destroyed. Misfortune.

Six in the second place剝床以辨,蔑貞凶。The bed is stripped at the frame. The true is destroyed. Misfortune.

Six in the third place剝之,无咎。In the midst of the stripping. No blame.

Six in the fourth place剝床以膚,凶。The bed is stripped to the skin. Misfortune.

Six in the fifth place貫魚,以宮人寵,无不利。A string of fish. Leading the palace ladies to receive favor. Nothing that is not favorable.

Nine at the top碩果不食,君子得輿,小人剝廬。A great fruit left uneaten. The noble one gains a carriage; the petty person strips his own hut.

24 Fu (Return) 復Earth over Thunder

Judgment亨。出入无疾,朋來无咎。反復其道,七日來復。利有攸往。Success. Going out and coming in without harm. Friends come, no blame. Turning back along the way, in seven days comes the return. It is favorable to have somewhere to go.

Nine at the beginning不遠復,无祗悔,元吉。Returning from not far away. It does not come to regret. Supreme good fortune.

Six in the second place休復,吉。A glad return. Good fortune.

Six in the third place頻復,厲无咎。Returning again and again. Danger, no blame.

Six in the fourth place中行獨復。Walking in the midst of others, returning alone.

Six in the fifth place敦復,无悔。An earnest return. No regret.

Six at the top迷復,凶,有災眚。用行師,終有大敗,以其國君凶,至于十年不克征。Lost on the return. Misfortune. There are calamities and disasters. If armies are set marching, in the end there is a great defeat, with misfortune for the ruler of the state. For ten years one cannot march.

25 Wuwang (Innocence) 无妄Heaven over Thunder

Judgment元亨利貞。其匪正有眚,不利有攸往。Great success. It is favorable to stay true. If one is not upright there is calamity. It is not favorable to go anywhere.

Nine at the beginning无妄,往吉。Innocence. Going forward brings good fortune.

Six in the second place不耕穫,不菑畬,則利有攸往。Not plowing for the sake of the harvest, not clearing land for the sake of the ripe field. Then it is favorable to have somewhere to go.

Six in the third place无妄之災。或繫之牛,行人之得,邑人之災。An undeserved calamity. Someone tethers an ox; the passerby's gain is the villager's calamity.

Nine in the fourth place可貞,无咎。One can stay true. No blame.

Nine in the fifth place无妄之疾,勿藥有喜。An undeserved illness. Take no medicine and there will be joy.

Nine at the top无妄,行有眚,无攸利。Innocence. Acting brings calamity. Nothing is favorable.

26 Daxu (Great Restraint) 大畜Mountain over Heaven

Judgment利貞。不家食吉,利涉大川。It is favorable to stay true. Not eating at home brings good fortune. It is favorable to cross the great river.

Nine at the beginning有厲,利已。There is danger. It is favorable to stop.

Nine in the second place輿說輹。The cart's axle mount comes off.

Nine in the third place良馬逐,利艱貞。曰閑輿衛,利有攸往。Fine horses give chase. It is favorable to stay true through hardship. Practice driving and defense every day. It is favorable to have somewhere to go.

Six in the fourth place童牛之牿,元吉。A headboard on a young bull. Supreme good fortune.

Six in the fifth place豶豕之牙,吉。The tusks of a gelded boar. Good fortune.

Nine at the top何天之衢,亨。How open the highway of heaven! Success.

27 Yi (Nourishment) 頤Mountain over Thunder

Judgment貞吉。觀頤,自求口實。Staying true brings good fortune. Observe the nourishing, and what one seeks to fill one's own mouth.

Nine at the beginning舍爾靈龜,觀我朵頤,凶。You put aside your sacred tortoise and watch my jaws at work. Misfortune.

Six in the second place顛頤,拂經,于丘頤,征凶。Nourishment upside down, against the norm. Seeking nourishment from the hill: setting forth brings misfortune.

Six in the third place拂頤,貞凶。十年勿用,无攸利。Going against nourishment. Persisting brings misfortune. Do not act for ten years. Nothing is favorable.

Nine at the top由頤,厲吉,利涉大川。The source of nourishment. Danger, yet good fortune. It is favorable to cross the great river.

28 Daguo (Great Excess) 大過Lake over Wind

Judgment棟橈。利有攸往,亨。The ridgepole sags. It is favorable to have somewhere to go. Success.

Six at the beginning藉用白茅,无咎。Spreading white thatch grass underneath. No blame.

Nine in the second place枯楊生稊,老夫得其女妻,无不利。A withered poplar sprouts at the root. An old man gets a young wife. Nothing that is not favorable.

Nine in the third place棟橈,凶。The ridgepole sags. Misfortune.

Nine in the fourth place棟隆,吉。有它吝。The ridgepole arches upward. Good fortune. If there is something else, humiliation.

Nine in the fifth place枯楊生華,老婦得其士夫,无咎无譽。A withered poplar blooms. An old woman gets a young husband. No blame, no praise.

Six at the top過涉滅頂,凶,无咎。Wading across, the water goes over the head. Misfortune. No blame.

29 Kan (The Abyss) 坎Water doubled

Judgment習坎,有孚,維心亨,行有尚。Abyss upon abyss. There is sincerity. In the heart, success. Acting brings merit.

Six at the beginning習坎,入于坎窞,凶。Abyss upon abyss. Falling into a pit within the abyss. Misfortune.

Nine in the second place坎有險,求小得。The abyss holds danger. Seek small gains.

Six in the third place來之坎坎,險且枕,入于坎窞,勿用。Coming or going, abyss upon abyss. Danger, and an uneasy rest. Falling into a pit within the abyss. Do not act.

Six in the fourth place樽酒簋貳,用缶,納約自牖,終无咎。A jug of wine, a bowl of food, a second added, in earthenware. The pledge is passed in through the window. In the end, no blame.

Nine in the fifth place坎不盈,祗既平,无咎。The abyss is not full, but it is reaching the level. No blame.

Six at the top係用徽纆,寘于叢棘,三歲不得,凶。Bound with braided cords, set among thorn bushes. For three years no way out. Misfortune.

30 Li (Clinging Fire) 離Fire doubled

Judgment利貞,亨。畜牝牛吉。It is favorable to stay true. Success. Raising a cow brings good fortune.

Nine at the beginning履錯然,敬之无咎。Footsteps crisscrossing. Be reverent and there is no blame.

Six in the second place黃離,元吉。Clinging to yellow. Supreme good fortune.

Nine in the third place日昃之離,不鼓缶而歌,則大耋之嗟,凶。The light of the setting sun. If one does not beat the clay pot and sing, there will be the sighs of great old age. Misfortune.

Nine in the fourth place突如其來如,焚如,死如,棄如。How sudden its coming! It burns, it dies, it is cast away.

Six in the fifth place出涕沱若,戚嗟若,吉。Tears in floods, grieving and sighing. Good fortune.

Nine at the top王用出征,有嘉折首,獲匪其醜,无咎。The king sends him out to march. There is merit in striking down the chief; the captives taken are not the rank and file. No blame.

31 Xian (Mutual Influence) 咸Lake over Mountain

Judgment亨,利貞。取女吉。Success. It is favorable to stay true. Taking a wife brings good fortune.

Six in the second place咸其腓,凶。居吉。The influence is in the calf. Misfortune. Staying put brings good fortune.

Nine in the third place咸其股,執其隨,往吝。The influence is in the thigh. He holds to what he follows. Going on brings humiliation.

Nine in the fourth place貞吉悔亡。憧憧往來,朋從爾思。Staying true brings good fortune; regret vanishes. Restlessly going back and forth, only your friends follow your thoughts.

Nine in the fifth place咸其脢,无悔。The influence is in the upper back. No regret.

Six at the top咸其輔頰舌。The influence is in the jaws, cheeks and tongue.

32 Heng (Endurance) 恆Thunder over Wind

Judgment亨,无咎,利貞。利有攸往。Success. No blame. It is favorable to stay true. It is favorable to have somewhere to go.

Six at the beginning浚恆,貞凶,无攸利。Digging deep for endurance. Persisting brings misfortune. Nothing is favorable.

Nine in the second place悔亡。Regret vanishes.

Nine in the third place不恆其德,或承之羞,貞吝。Not enduring in his virtue, he may be handed disgrace. Persisting brings humiliation.

Nine in the fourth place田无禽。No game in the field.

Six in the fifth place恆其德,貞。婦人吉,夫子凶。Enduring in one's virtue, staying true. For a wife, good fortune; for a husband, misfortune.

Six at the top振恆,凶。Restless endurance. Misfortune.

33 Dun (Retreat) 遯Heaven over Mountain

Judgment亨,小利貞。Success. For the small, it is favorable to stay true.

Six at the beginning遯尾,厲。勿用有攸往。The tail of the retreat. Danger. Do not go anywhere.

Six in the second place執之用黃牛之革,莫之勝說。Bind it with yellow ox hide. No one can loosen it.

Nine in the third place係遯,有疾厲。畜臣妾吉。A retreat held back by ties. There is sickness and danger. Keeping servants and maids brings good fortune.

Nine in the fourth place好遯,君子吉,小人否。Retreating from what one is fond of. For the noble one, good fortune; for the petty person, not so.

Nine in the fifth place嘉遯,貞吉。An admirable retreat. Staying true brings good fortune.

Nine at the top肥遯,无不利。A retreat in ease and plenty. Nothing that is not favorable.

34 Dazhuang (Great Strength) 大壯Thunder over Heaven

Judgment利貞。It is favorable to stay true.

Nine at the beginning壯于趾,征凶,有孚。Strength in the toes. To set forth brings misfortune; this can be trusted.

Nine in the second place貞吉。Staying true brings good fortune.

Nine in the third place小人用壯,君子用罔,貞厲。羝羊觸藩,羸其角。The petty person uses strength; the noble one treats everything as nothing. Persisting is dangerous. A ram butts the hedge and gets its horns stuck.

Nine in the fourth place貞吉悔亡。藩決不羸,壯于大輿之輹。Staying true brings good fortune; regret vanishes. The hedge breaks open and the horns are not stuck. Strength in the axle of a great cart.

Six in the fifth place喪羊于易,无悔。The sheep is lost before one notices. No regret.

Six at the top羝羊觸藩,不能退,不能遂,无攸利。艱則吉。A ram butts the hedge. It cannot pull back, it cannot push through. Nothing is favorable. Face the difficulty, and there is good fortune.

35 Jin (Advance) 晉Fire over Earth

Judgment康侯用錫馬蕃庶,晝日三接。The marquis who steadies the realm is granted horses in great number. In a single day he is received three times.

Six at the beginning晉如摧如,貞吉。罔孚,裕无咎。Advancing, then thrust back. Staying true brings good fortune. Not yet trusted: stay at ease, and there is no blame.

Six in the second place晉如愁如,貞吉。受茲介福,于其王母。Advancing, yet in sorrow. Staying true brings good fortune. One receives this great blessing from one's grandmother.

Six in the third place眾允,悔亡。All give their trust. Regret vanishes.

Nine in the fourth place晉如鼫鼠,貞厲。Advancing like a big rat. Persisting is dangerous.

Six in the fifth place悔亡,失得勿恤。往吉,无不利。Regret vanishes. Do not worry over loss or gain. Going brings good fortune; nothing that is not favorable.

Nine at the top晉其角,維用伐邑。厲吉无咎,貞吝。Advancing to the tip of the horns. It is fit only for subduing one's own town. Danger, yet good fortune and no blame. Persisting brings humiliation.

36 Mingyi (Darkened Light) 明夷Earth over Fire

Judgment利艱貞。It is favorable to stay true through hardship.

Nine at the beginning明夷于飛,垂其翼。君子于行,三日不食。有攸往,主人有言。Darkened light in flight, its wings drooping. The noble one on the road goes three days without eating. There is somewhere to go; the host has words to say.

Six in the second place明夷,夷于左股,用拯馬壯,吉。Darkened light, wounded in the left thigh. Rescue comes by a strong horse. Good fortune.

Nine in the third place明夷于南狩,得其大首,不可疾貞。Darkened light on the southern hunt. Their great chief is taken. Do not rush to set everything right.

Six in the fourth place入于左腹,獲明夷之心,于出門庭。Entering the left side of the belly, one grasps the heart of the darkened light, and goes out through the gate and courtyard.

Six in the fifth place箕子之明夷,利貞。The darkened light of Jizi. It is favorable to stay true.

Six at the top不明晦,初登于天,後入于地。No light, only darkness. First it climbed to heaven; afterward it plunged into the earth.

37 Jiaren (The Family) 家人Wind over Fire

Judgment利女貞。It is favorable for the woman to stay true.

Nine at the beginning閑有家,悔亡。Set bounds within the household. Regret vanishes.

Six in the second place无攸遂,在中饋,貞吉。Nothing is pursued on one's own account. One stays within and tends the meals. Staying true brings good fortune.

Nine in the third place家人嗃嗃,悔厲吉。婦子嘻嘻,終吝。The household is ruled with harsh scolding: regret and danger, yet good fortune. Wife and children giggle and chatter: in the end, humiliation.

Six in the fourth place富家,大吉。Enriching the household. Great good fortune.

Nine in the fifth place王假有家,勿恤,吉。The king reaches his household. Do not worry. Good fortune.

Nine at the top有孚威如,終吉。There is sincerity, and a commanding dignity. In the end, good fortune.

38 Kui (Opposition) 睽Fire over Lake

Judgment小事吉。In small matters, good fortune.

Nine at the beginning悔亡。喪馬勿逐,自復。見惡人,无咎。Regret vanishes. The horse is lost: do not chase it, it returns by itself. Meet the disagreeable person: no blame.

Nine in the second place遇主于巷,无咎。Meeting one's lord in a lane. No blame.

Six in the third place見輿曳,其牛掣,其人天且劓。无初有終。One sees the cart dragged back, the ox hauled at, the driver with head shaved and nose cut off. No beginning, but there is an end.

Nine in the fourth place睽孤,遇元夫,交孚,厲无咎。Alone in opposition. One meets a person of real worth, and they trust each other. Danger, no blame.

Six in the fifth place悔亡。厥宗噬膚,往何咎。Regret vanishes. The clansman bites through soft flesh. Going forward, what blame could there be?

Nine at the top睽孤,見豕負塗,載鬼一車。先張之弧,後說之弧。匪寇婚媾,往遇雨則吉。Alone in opposition. One sees a pig covered in mud, a cart full of ghosts. First the bow is drawn, then the bow is set down. Not a robber but a suitor. Going forward, meeting rain brings good fortune.

39 Jian (Obstruction) 蹇Water over Mountain

Judgment利西南,不利東北。利見大人,貞吉。The southwest is favorable; the northeast is not favorable. It is favorable to see the great person. Staying true brings good fortune.

Six at the beginning往蹇來譽。Going meets obstruction; coming back wins praise.

Six in the second place王臣蹇蹇,匪躬之故。The king's servant meets obstruction upon obstruction, and not for his own sake.

Nine in the third place往蹇來反。Going meets obstruction; one comes back.

Six in the fourth place往蹇來連。Going meets obstruction; coming back, one joins with others.

Nine in the fifth place大蹇朋來。In great obstruction, friends come.

Six at the top往蹇來碩,吉。利見大人。Going meets obstruction; coming back brings greatness. Good fortune. It is favorable to see the great person.

40 Xie (Release) 解Thunder over Water

Judgment利西南。无所往,其來復吉。有攸往,夙吉。The southwest is favorable. With nowhere to go, coming back brings good fortune. With somewhere to go, going early brings good fortune.

Six at the beginning无咎。No blame.

Nine in the second place田獲三狐,得黃矢,貞吉。In the hunt, three foxes are caught and a yellow arrow is gained. Staying true brings good fortune.

Six in the third place負且乘,致寇至,貞吝。Carrying a load on the back while riding in a carriage: this brings the robbers. Persisting brings humiliation.

Nine in the fourth place解而拇,朋至斯孚。Release your big toe. Then the friend arrives, and there is trust.

Six in the fifth place君子維有解,吉。有孚于小人。The noble one brings about release. Good fortune. It is borne out in the petty people.

Six at the top公用射隼于高墉之上,獲之,无不利。The duke shoots a hawk on top of a high wall and takes it. Nothing that is not favorable.

41 Sun (Decrease) 損Mountain over Lake

Judgment有孚,元吉,无咎,可貞,利有攸往。曷之用?二簋可用享。There is sincerity. Supreme good fortune, no blame. One can stay true. It is favorable to have somewhere to go. What should be used? Two bowls can be used for the offering.

Nine at the beginning已事遄往,无咎。酌損之。Leave one's own work and go quickly. No blame. Weigh how much to decrease.

Nine in the second place利貞,征凶。弗損益之。It is favorable to stay true. To set forth brings misfortune. Without decreasing oneself, one increases others.

Six in the third place三人行則損一人,一人行則得其友。Three people walking together lose one. One person walking alone finds a friend.

Six in the fourth place損其疾,使遄有喜,无咎。Decrease one's ailment, and quickly, so that there is joy. No blame.

Six in the fifth place或益之十朋之龜,弗克違,元吉。Someone increases one with a tortoise worth ten pairs of shells; it cannot be refused. Supreme good fortune.

Nine at the top弗損益之,无咎,貞吉。利有攸往,得臣无家。Without decreasing oneself, one increases others. No blame. Staying true brings good fortune. It is favorable to have somewhere to go. One gains followers beyond any single household.

42 Yi (Increase) 益Wind over Thunder

Judgment利有攸往,利涉大川。It is favorable to have somewhere to go. It is favorable to cross the great river.

Nine at the beginning利用為大作,元吉,无咎。It is favorable to undertake great works. Supreme good fortune, no blame.

Six in the second place或益之十朋之龜,弗克違,永貞吉。王用享于帝,吉。Someone increases one with a tortoise worth ten pairs of shells; it cannot be refused. Staying true for the long run brings good fortune. The king makes an offering to the Lord on High. Good fortune.

Six in the third place益之用凶事,无咎。有孚中行,告公用圭。Increased by means of misfortune. No blame. With sincerity, walking the middle way, report to the duke with the jade tablet.

Six in the fourth place中行告公從,利用為依遷國。Walking the middle way, report to the duke and he follows. It is favorable to be relied upon in moving the capital.

Nine in the fifth place有孚惠心,勿問元吉。有孚惠我德。There is sincerity and a kind heart. Do not ask: supreme good fortune. There is sincerity, and kindness returned to my virtue.

Nine at the top莫益之,或擊之。立心勿恆,凶。No one brings increase; someone strikes instead. The heart is set without constancy. Misfortune.

43 Guai (Resolution) 夬Lake over Heaven

Judgment揚于王庭,孚號有厲。告自邑,不利即戎。利有攸往。Proclaim it in the king's court. Call out in sincerity; there is danger. Announce it to one's own town. It is not favorable to take up arms. It is favorable to have somewhere to go.

Nine at the beginning壯于前趾,往不勝為咎。Strength in the forward toes. Going without being able to win becomes blame.

Nine in the second place惕號,莫夜有戎,勿恤。Alert, calling out. Armed attack late at night: do not worry.

Nine in the third place壯于頄,有凶。君子夬夬獨行,遇雨若濡,有慍,无咎。Strength in the cheekbones: there is misfortune. The noble one, utterly resolved, walks alone, meets rain and is as if soaked; there is resentment. No blame.

Nine in the fourth place臀无膚,其行次且。牽羊悔亡,聞言不信。No skin on the buttocks; walking falters. Lead the sheep, and regret vanishes. Hearing these words, one does not believe.

Nine in the fifth place莧陸夬夬,中行无咎。Pulling up purslane, utterly resolved. Walking the middle way, no blame.

Six at the top无號,終有凶。No one to call to. In the end there is misfortune.

44 Gou (Encounter) 姤Heaven over Wind

Judgment女壯,勿用取女。The woman is strong. Do not take this woman as a wife.

Six at the beginning繫于金柅,貞吉。有攸往,見凶。羸豕孚蹢躅。Tie it to a metal brake. Staying true brings good fortune. With somewhere to go, one sees misfortune. A lean pig is sure to stamp and pace.

Nine in the second place包有魚,无咎,不利賓。There is a fish in the kitchen. No blame. Not favorable for guests.

Nine in the third place臀无膚,其行次且,厲,无大咎。No skin on the buttocks; walking falters. Danger, but no great blame.

Nine in the fourth place包无魚,起凶。No fish in the kitchen. Rising up brings misfortune.

Nine in the fifth place以杞包瓜,含章,有隕自天。A melon sheltered by the tall willow. Brilliance held within. Something falls from heaven.

Nine at the top姤其角,吝,无咎。Encounter at the horns. Humiliation. No blame.

45 Cui (Gathering) 萃Lake over Earth

Judgment亨。王假有廟,利見大人,亨,利貞。用大牲吉,利有攸往。Success. The king comes to his temple. It is favorable to see the great person. Success; it is favorable to stay true. Using great sacrificial animals brings good fortune. It is favorable to have somewhere to go.

Six at the beginning有孚不終,乃亂乃萃。若號,一握為笑。勿恤,往无咎。There is sincerity, but not to the end; now disorder, now gathering. If one calls out, the whole group laughs. Do not worry. Going brings no blame.

Six in the second place引吉,无咎。孚乃利用禴。Being drawn in brings good fortune, no blame. With sincerity, even a simple offering is favorable.

Six in the third place萃如嗟如,无攸利。往无咎,小吝。Gathering, and sighing. Nothing is favorable. Going brings no blame; slight humiliation.

Nine in the fourth place大吉,无咎。Great good fortune; no blame.

Nine in the fifth place萃有位,无咎。匪孚,元永貞,悔亡。Gathering, and holding the position. No blame. Where there is no trust: be great, lasting and true, and regret vanishes.

Six at the top齎咨涕洟,无咎。Sighing and lamenting, tears and sniveling. No blame.

46 Sheng (Rising) 升Earth over Wind

Judgment元亨。用見大人,勿恤。南征吉。Great success. Go and see the great person; do not worry. Setting forth to the south brings good fortune.

Six at the beginning允升,大吉。Rising in trust. Great good fortune.

Nine in the second place孚乃利用禴,无咎。With sincerity, even a simple offering is favorable. No blame.

Nine in the third place升虛邑。Rising into an empty town.

Six in the fourth place王用亨于岐山,吉,无咎。The king makes an offering on Mount Qi. Good fortune, no blame.

Six in the fifth place貞吉,升階。Staying true brings good fortune. Rising by steps.

Six at the top冥升,利于不息之貞。Rising in the dark. It is favorable to stay true without ceasing.

47 Kun (Exhaustion) 困Lake over Water

Judgment亨。貞,大人吉,无咎。有言不信。Success. Staying true: for the great person, good fortune, no blame. There are words, but they are not believed.

Six at the beginning臀困于株木,入于幽谷,三歲不覿。The buttocks are hemmed in by a tree stump. One enters a dark valley and for three years sees no one.

Nine in the second place困于酒食,朱紱方來,利用亨祀。征凶,无咎。Hemmed in by wine and food. The scarlet sash is just arriving. It is favorable to make offerings and sacrifices. To set forth brings misfortune. No blame.

Six in the third place困于石,據于蒺藜。入于其宮,不見其妻,凶。Hemmed in by stone, leaning on thorns. One enters the house and does not see one's wife. Misfortune.

Nine in the fourth place來徐徐,困于金車。吝,有終。Coming slowly, slowly, hemmed in by a golden carriage. Humiliation, but there is an end.

Nine in the fifth place劓刖,困于赤紱。乃徐有說,利用祭祀。Nose cut off, feet cut off. Hemmed in by the crimson sash. Then slowly comes relief. It is favorable to offer sacrifice.

Six at the top困于葛藟,于臲卼。曰動悔有悔,征吉。Hemmed in by creeping vines, on a tottering height. One says: to move brings regret. With true regret, setting forth brings good fortune.

48 Jing (The Well) 井Water over Wind

Judgment改邑不改井,无喪无得,往來井井。汔至亦未繘井,羸其瓶,凶。The town may be changed, but not the well. It neither loses nor gains. People come and go, drawing from the well. If the rope has nearly reached the top but is not yet out of the well, and the jar breaks: misfortune.

Six at the beginning井泥不食,舊井无禽。The well is muddy and no one drinks from it. An old well: no birds come.

Nine in the second place井谷射鮒,甕敝漏。In the well's hollow, water trickles to the minnows. The jug is broken and leaks.

Nine in the third place井渫不食,為我心惻。可用汲,王明並受其福。The well is cleaned out, yet no one drinks. My heart aches for it. It could be drawn. If the king is clear-sighted, all share in the blessing.

Six in the fourth place井甃,无咎。The well is lined with brick. No blame.

Nine in the fifth place井冽,寒泉食。The well is clear; its cold spring water is drunk.

Six at the top井收勿幕,有孚元吉。The well is drawn from; do not cover it. There is sincerity. Supreme good fortune.

49 Ge (Revolution) 革Lake over Fire

Judgment巳日乃孚。元亨利貞,悔亡。Only when the day has come is there trust. Great success; it is favorable to stay true. Regret vanishes.

Nine at the beginning鞏用黃牛之革。Bound fast with the hide of a yellow ox.

Six in the second place巳日乃革之,征吉,无咎。When the day has come, then change it. To set forth brings good fortune. No blame.

Nine in the third place征凶,貞厲。革言三就,有孚。To set forth brings misfortune. Persisting is dangerous. When talk of change has gone around three times, there is trust.

Nine in the fourth place悔亡。有孚改命,吉。Regret vanishes. With trust, one changes the mandate. Good fortune.

Nine in the fifth place大人虎變,未占有孚。The great person changes like a tiger. Even before the divination, there is trust.

Six at the top君子豹變,小人革面。征凶,居貞吉。The noble one changes like a leopard. The petty person changes his face. To set forth brings misfortune. Staying put and staying true brings good fortune.

50 Ding (The Cauldron) 鼎Fire over Wind

Judgment元吉,亨。Supreme good fortune. Success.

Six at the beginning鼎顛趾,利出否。得妾以其子,无咎。The cauldron is tipped over, feet in the air. It is favorable for getting the foul stuff out. One takes a concubine and gains a son by her. No blame.

Nine in the second place鼎有實,我仇有疾,不我能即,吉。The cauldron is full. My counterpart has an ailment and cannot get near me. Good fortune.

Nine in the third place鼎耳革,其行塞,雉膏不食。方雨虧悔,終吉。The cauldron's ears are changed and it cannot be moved. The rich pheasant meat is not eaten. When the rain comes, regret lessens. Good fortune in the end.

Nine in the fourth place鼎折足,覆公餗,其形渥,凶。The cauldron's leg breaks. The duke's meal is spilled and the person is drenched. Misfortune.

Six in the fifth place鼎黃耳金鉉,利貞。The cauldron has yellow ears and a metal carrying bar. It is favorable to stay true.

Nine at the top鼎玉鉉,大吉,无不利。The cauldron has a jade carrying bar. Great good fortune. Nothing that is not favorable.

51 Zhen (Thunder) 震Thunder doubled

Judgment亨。震來虩虩,笑言啞啞。震驚百里,不喪匕鬯。Success. Thunder comes and all is alarm. There is talk and laughter. The thunder startles a hundred miles, yet the ladle and the sacrificial wine are not dropped.

Nine at the beginning震來虩虩,後笑言啞啞,吉。Thunder comes and all is alarm; afterward, talk and laughter. Good fortune.

Six in the second place震來厲,億喪貝,躋于九陵。勿逐,七日得。Thunder comes with danger. A great deal of treasure is lost, and one climbs the nine hills. Do not chase it. In seven days it is regained.

Six in the third place震蘇蘇,震行无眚。Thunder leaves one dazed. If the shock sets one moving, there is no calamity.

Nine in the fourth place震遂泥。Thunder, and then stuck in the mud.

Six in the fifth place震往來厲,億无喪,有事。Thunder comes and goes: danger. There is no great loss, and there are things to be done.

Six at the top震索索,視矍矍,征凶。震不于其躬,于其鄰,无咎。婚媾有言。Thunder leaves one trembling, eyes darting about. To set forth brings misfortune. The thunder has not reached oneself, only one's neighbor: no blame. Among the in-laws there is talk.

52 Gen (Stillness) 艮Mountain doubled

Six at the beginning艮其趾,无咎,利永貞。Stilling the toes. No blame. It is favorable to stay true for the long run.

Six in the second place艮其腓,不拯其隨,其心不快。Stilling the calves. One cannot rescue the person one follows, and the heart is not glad.

Nine in the third place艮其限,列其夤,厲薰心。Stilling the waist, tearing the flesh along the spine. Danger; it scorches the heart.

Six in the fourth place艮其身,无咎。Stilling the body. No blame.

Six in the fifth place艮其輔,言有序,悔亡。Stilling the jaws. Words are in order. Regret vanishes.

Nine at the top敦艮,吉。Stillness, solid and sincere. Good fortune.

53 Jian (Gradual Progress) 漸Wind over Mountain

Judgment女歸吉,利貞。The woman goes to be married: good fortune. It is favorable to stay true.

Six at the beginning鴻漸于干,小子厲,有言,无咎。The wild goose moves gradually to the water's edge. For the young one, danger. There is talk. No blame.

Six in the second place鴻漸于磐,飲食衎衎,吉。The wild goose moves gradually to the great rock. It eats and drinks in contentment. Good fortune.

Nine in the third place鴻漸于陸,夫征不復,婦孕不育,凶。利禦寇。The wild goose moves gradually to the dry land. The husband marches out and does not return. The wife conceives but does not raise the child. Misfortune. It is favorable to fend off robbers.

Six in the fourth place鴻漸于木,或得其桷,无咎。The wild goose moves gradually to the trees. Perhaps it finds a flat branch. No blame.

Nine in the fifth place鴻漸于陵,婦三歲不孕,終莫之勝,吉。The wild goose moves gradually to the hill. For three years the wife does not conceive. In the end nothing can overcome her. Good fortune.

Nine at the top鴻漸于陸,其羽可用為儀,吉。The wild goose moves gradually to the heights. Its feathers can be used for the ceremony. Good fortune.

54 Guimei (The Marrying Maiden) 歸妹Thunder over Lake

Judgment征凶,无攸利。To set forth brings misfortune. Nothing is favorable.

Nine at the beginning歸妹以娣,跛能履,征吉。The maiden marries as a secondary wife. The lame can still walk. To set forth brings good fortune.

Nine in the second place眇能視,利幽人之貞。The one-eyed can still see. It is favorable to stay true like one who lives in seclusion.

Six in the third place歸妹以須,反歸以娣。The maiden waits to be married. She turns back and marries as a secondary wife.

Nine in the fourth place歸妹愆期,遲歸有時。The maiden lets the date pass. A late marriage has its time.

Six in the fifth place帝乙歸妹,其君之袂,不如其娣之袂良。月幾望,吉。Emperor Yi gives his younger sister in marriage. The princess's sleeves are not as fine as those of the secondary wife. The moon is nearly full. Good fortune.

Six at the top女承筐无實,士刲羊无血,无攸利。The woman holds a basket, but nothing is in it. The man stabs a sheep, but no blood flows. Nothing is favorable.

55 Feng (Abundance) 豐Thunder over Fire

Judgment亨,王假之。勿憂,宜日中。Success. The king attains it. Do not worry. Be like the sun at midday.

Nine at the beginning遇其配主,雖旬无咎,往有尚。One meets the lord who is one's match. Though they are equals, no blame. Going earns esteem.

Six in the second place豐其蔀,日中見斗。往得疑疾,有孚發若,吉。The screen is so large that the Dipper is seen at midday. Going brings suspicion and ill will. There is sincerity that opens the way: good fortune.

Nine in the third place豐其沛,日中見沬。折其右肱,无咎。The curtain is so large that the faint stars are seen at midday. The right arm is broken. No blame.

Nine in the fourth place豐其蔀,日中見斗。遇其夷主,吉。The screen is so large that the Dipper is seen at midday. One meets the lord who is one's equal. Good fortune.

Six in the fifth place來章,有慶譽,吉。Brilliance is brought in. There is celebration and praise. Good fortune.

Six at the top豐其屋,蔀其家,窺其戶,闃其无人,三歲不覿,凶。The house is made grand and the household screened off. Peering through the door: silent, no one there. For three years no one is seen. Misfortune.

56 Lü (The Wanderer) 旅Fire over Mountain

Judgment小亨,旅貞吉。Small success. For the wanderer, staying true brings good fortune.

Six at the beginning旅瑣瑣,斯其所取災。The wanderer is petty and fussy. This is how he brings calamity on himself.

Six in the second place旅即次,懷其資,得童僕貞。The wanderer reaches a lodging, his money kept close. He gains a young servant who is true.

Nine in the third place旅焚其次,喪其童僕,貞厲。The wanderer's lodging burns down. He loses his young servant. Persisting is dangerous.

Nine in the fourth place旅于處,得其資斧,我心不快。The wanderer finds a place to stay and obtains his funds and an axe. My heart is not glad.

Six in the fifth place射雉,一矢亡,終以譽命。Shooting a pheasant, one arrow is lost. In the end there is praise and an appointment.

Nine at the top鳥焚其巢,旅人先笑後號咷。喪牛于易,凶。The bird's nest burns. The wanderer laughs at first, then wails and weeps. He loses his ox through carelessness. Misfortune.

57 Xun (The Gentle Wind) 巽Wind doubled

Judgment小亨,利有攸往,利見大人。Small success. It is favorable to have somewhere to go. It is favorable to see the great person.

Six at the beginning進退,利武人之貞。Advancing and retreating. It is favorable to stay true like a soldier.

Nine in the second place巽在床下,用史巫紛若,吉无咎。Yielding beneath the bed. Invocators and shamans are used in great number. Good fortune, no blame.

Nine in the third place頻巽,吝。Yielding again and again. Humiliation.

Six in the fourth place悔亡,田獲三品。Regret vanishes. In the hunt, three kinds of game are taken.

Nine in the fifth place貞吉悔亡,无不利。无初有終。先庚三日,後庚三日,吉。Staying true brings good fortune; regret vanishes. Nothing that is not favorable. No beginning, but there is an end. Three days before the change, three days after the change. Good fortune.

Nine at the top巽在床下,喪其資斧,貞凶。Yielding beneath the bed. One loses one's funds and axe. Persisting brings misfortune.

58 Dui (Joy) 兌Lake doubled

Judgment亨,利貞。Success. It is favorable to stay true.

Nine at the beginning和兌,吉。Harmonious joy. Good fortune.

Nine in the second place孚兌,吉,悔亡。Sincere joy. Good fortune. Regret vanishes.

Six in the third place來兌,凶。Coming forward for joy. Misfortune.

Nine in the fourth place商兌未寧,介疾有喜。Deliberating over joy, not yet at peace. Holding firm against the sickness, there is happiness.

Nine in the fifth place孚于剝,有厲。Trusting in what strips away. There is danger.

Six at the top引兌。Joy that draws others along.

59 Huan (Dispersion) 渙Wind over Water

Judgment亨。王假有廟,利涉大川,利貞。Success. The king comes to his temple. It is favorable to cross the great river. It is favorable to stay true.

Six at the beginning用拯馬壯,吉。Rescuing with a strong horse. Good fortune.

Nine in the second place渙奔其机,悔亡。Amid dispersion, one runs to one's support. Regret vanishes.

Six in the third place渙其躬,无悔。Dispersing one's own self. No regret.

Six in the fourth place渙其群,元吉。渙有丘,匪夷所思。Dispersing one's group. Supreme good fortune. Dispersion gives rise to a hill. It is not what ordinary minds would think of.

Nine in the fifth place渙汗其大號,渙王居,无咎。The great proclamation goes out like sweat. The king's stores are dispersed. No blame.

Nine at the top渙其血,去逖出,无咎。Dispersing the blood. It is gone, far away, and out. No blame.

60 Jie (Limitation) 節Water over Lake

Judgment亨。苦節不可貞。Success. Bitter limitation cannot be held to as the true course.

Nine at the beginning不出戶庭,无咎。Not going out of the door to the inner courtyard. No blame.

Nine in the second place不出門庭,凶。Not going out of the gate of the outer courtyard. Misfortune.

Six in the third place不節若,則嗟若,无咎。No limitation, and then lamenting. No blame.

Six in the fourth place安節,亨。Limitation at peace. Success.

Nine in the fifth place甘節,吉。往有尚。Sweet limitation. Good fortune. Going earns esteem.

Six at the top苦節,貞凶,悔亡。Bitter limitation. Persisting brings misfortune. Regret vanishes.

61 Zhongfu (Inner Truth) 中孚Wind over Lake

Judgment豚魚吉,利涉大川,利貞。Piglets and fish: good fortune. It is favorable to cross the great river. It is favorable to stay true.

Nine at the beginning虞吉,有它不燕。Weighing it first: good fortune. If there is something else, there is no rest.

Nine in the second place鳴鶴在陰,其子和之。我有好爵,吾與爾靡之。A crane calls in the shade; its young one answers. I have a fine cup of wine; I will share it with you.

Six in the third place得敵,或鼓或罷,或泣或歌。One meets one's match. Now drumming, now stopping. Now weeping, now singing.

Six in the fourth place月幾望,馬匹亡,无咎。The moon is nearly full. The horse loses its mate. No blame.

Nine in the fifth place有孚攣如,无咎。There is sincerity that binds fast. No blame.

Nine at the top翰音登于天,貞凶。The rooster's cry rises toward heaven. Persisting brings misfortune.

62 Xiaoguo (Small Excess) 小過Thunder over Mountain

Judgment亨,利貞。可小事,不可大事。飛鳥遺之音,不宜上,宜下,大吉。Success. It is favorable to stay true. Small things may be done; great things may not. The flying bird leaves its call behind. It is not right to go up; it is right to go down. Great good fortune.

Six at the beginning飛鳥以凶。The bird flies on, and so there is misfortune.

Six in the second place過其祖,遇其妣。不及其君,遇其臣,无咎。Passing by the grandfather, meeting the grandmother. Not reaching the ruler, meeting the minister. No blame.

Nine in the third place弗過防之,從或戕之,凶。Not taking extra care to guard oneself, one may be followed and harmed. Misfortune.

Nine in the fourth place无咎,弗過遇之。往厲必戒,勿用永貞。No blame. Without going too far, one meets it. Going on is dangerous; one must be on guard. Do not hold to one course forever.

Six in the fifth place密雲不雨,自我西郊。公弋取彼在穴。Dense clouds but no rain, coming from our western outskirts. The duke shoots a corded arrow and takes the one in the cave.

Six at the top弗遇過之,飛鳥離之,凶,是謂災眚。Not meeting it, one passes it by. The flying bird is caught in the net. Misfortune. This is called calamity and disaster.

63 Jiji (After Completion) 既濟Water over Fire

Judgment亨小,利貞。初吉終亂。Small success. It is favorable to stay true. Good fortune at the beginning, disorder at the end.

Nine at the beginning曳其輪,濡其尾,无咎。Dragging back the wheels, wetting the tail. No blame.

Six in the second place婦喪其茀,勿逐,七日得。The wife loses her carriage screen. Do not chase it. In seven days it is regained.

Nine in the third place高宗伐鬼方,三年克之,小人勿用。Gaozong attacks the Demon Land and conquers it in three years. Do not employ petty people.

Six in the fourth place繻有衣袽,終日戒。There is a leak, and there are rags to stop it. Be on guard all day long.

Nine in the fifth place東鄰殺牛,不如西鄰之禴祭,實受其福。The eastern neighbor slaughters an ox. It does not equal the western neighbor's simple offering, which truly receives the blessing.

Six at the top濡其首,厲。The head gets wet. Danger.

64 Weiji (Before Completion) 未濟Fire over Water

Judgment亨。小狐汔濟,濡其尾,无攸利。Success. The little fox has nearly crossed when it wets its tail. Nothing is favorable.

Six at the beginning濡其尾,吝。The tail gets wet. Humiliation.

Nine in the second place曳其輪,貞吉。Dragging back the wheels. Staying true brings good fortune.

Six in the third place未濟,征凶,利涉大川。Not yet across. To set forth brings misfortune. It is favorable to cross the great river.

Nine in the fourth place貞吉悔亡。震用伐鬼方,三年有賞于大國。Staying true brings good fortune; regret vanishes. With thunderous force one attacks the Demon Land. In three years there are rewards from the great state.

Six in the fifth place貞吉无悔。君子之光,有孚,吉。Staying true brings good fortune; no regret. The light of the noble one. There is sincerity. Good fortune.

Nine at the top有孚于飲酒,无咎。濡其首,有孚失是。There is confidence in drinking wine. No blame. The head gets wet: with all that confidence, one loses what is right.
